work presents a theoretical study on the Earth's atmosphere and
the phenomenon of atmospheric luminescence, known as airglow, with
the objective of analyzing the small-scale gravity waves observed
over the Space Observatory of S{\~a}o Martinho da Serra-RS in the
period from 2017 to 2018. The study begins with a theoretical
review of the Earth's atmosphere, addressing its structure,
chemical composition and physical processes involved. Then, a
specific literature review is carried out on gravity waves,
disturbances caused by the action of gravity in the atmosphere,
studying their generation mechanisms, propagation and detection
and analysis techniques, as well as the relationship with airglow.
In order to carry out the analysis of the atmospheric luminescence
images, it was necessary to have knowledge in programming in the
IDL language, using it to linearize and analyze the images
obtained in the Space Observatory. In this study, a theoretical
analysis of the subject in question will be exposed, together with
examples of the collected data, the description of the analysis
approach, which includes the step of linearization of the images,
and demonstrations of the results achieved. In addition, the study
contributes to the development of techniques for analyzing
atmospheric luminescence images using IDL programming, which can
be applied in future research on the subject.",
